It is Memorial Day weekend, a time to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. Here are some ways to spend it — a three-day weekend for some.
Submarine event
The Carnegie Science Center will host a Submarine Memorial on USS Requin from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday on the North Shore.
Approximately 40 submarine veterans of USS VI Requin Base will be aboard the Cold War-era submarine. They will toll a bell and cast flower petals on the water so that they may “travel down the rivers of this great nation to the oceans” where fellow submarines are at rest. A Marine Color Guard will be in attendance and an Honor Guard will perform a 21-gun salute.
USS Requin was inducted into the Submarine Hall of Fame in 2017. The Hall of Fame recognizes post-WWII submarines that made significant contributions to submarine tactics and technology. Requin protected the east coast during the Cold War.
Admission is $25 for adults, $20 for seniors 65 and older, $15 for children ages 3-12. Children under 2 are free. Members of the military receive half-price general admission tickets for themselves and up to three others.

Parade and service
The annual Lawrenceville Memorial Day Parade Association event is Monday. For more than 100 years, the parade has been part of the neighborhood and attracts thousands of spectators along Butler Street.
The parade is produced by VFW Post 214 in Lawrenceville. It starts at 10 a.m. at 36th and Butler streets and leads into the Allegheny Cemetery, where there will be a memorial service. There will be close to 70 groups participating, such as military, fire, police, paramedics, little league teams, scouts, clowns, mascots and superheroes.

Soldiers and Sailors
Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum in Oakland is hosting a Memorial Day Celebration & Ceremony from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday to honor those who have served our country.
Guests can tour the museum for free. There will be family activities, contests and entertainment.
There will be a tribute for fallen post-9/11 Pennsylvania veterans and an observation at 3 p.m. for the National Moment of Remembrance, an annual event asking Americans, wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, to pause for a duration of one minute to remember those who have died in military service to the United States.
Camp Chase Fifes and Drums, a group that performs Civil War music in period costumes, will be playing patriotic military music throughout the day.
The event is free. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Billy Porter
Grammy, Emmy, and two-time Tony winner Billy Porter brings his first pop music concert tour, “The Black Mona Lisa Tour: Volume 1,” to Pittsburgh.
There will be a full band and a video installation of Porter telling his life story through song. The 90-minute show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at Heinz Hall, Downtown. Songs featured will be “Love Is on the Way” and “Love Yourself,” some with a tinge of Broadway, and a nod to the drama “Pose.” There will be performances of future pop classics from Porter’s forthcoming album, “Black Mona Lisa.”
Tickets start at $39. VIP packages are sold out.

Filmerding
Westinghouse Arts Academy, a public charter school, is hosting a film festival called “Filmerding” as part of Arts Fest from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at Wilmerding Park. It will showcase student work in animation, commercials and short films. It is also open to members of the community. There will be films by Westinghouse teacher Rob Shultz and Chris Niespodzianski of Orchard Place Productions and a collection of animated short shorts and other digital productions by students.
Performances include previews of Westinghouse’s summer theater programming, literary readings, dance performances and instrumental music. There will be kids’ activities and student vendors selling handmade items.
Inside the Westinghouse Castle there will be visual art from digital and studio arts students as well as promotional videos throughout the day in the new 700-seat movie theater.
