A woman walking at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Neville Street in Oakland was in critical condition Friday night after being struck by a vehicle, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety.

The news release said the incident happened as about 7:20 p.m.

The woman, who was unconscious when first responders arrived, suffered head injuries. She was taken by ambulance to an area hospital and immediately into surgery. She was not identified.

According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, the initial investigation indicates that a vehicle was traveling outbound on Fifth Avenue when

a another traveling in the opposite direction tried to turn left onto Neville Street.

“The outbound vehicle swerved to avoid a collision and inadvertently struck the female pedestrian,” officials said.

The driver of that vehicle, a man who authorities did not identify, stayed on the scene and “was fully cooperative with police.”

The statement said the incident was captured on closed circuit TV.

Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating.
