When Beto Ydrach headed in a ball in the final minute of a May 7 US Open Cup match against New York City FC, it was one of the highlights of the season for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

Problem is, that’s the only goal they’ve scored in their last four games.

Matt Mahoney scored in the 12th minute of the match and it stood as the game-winner as the Colorado Springs Switchbacks secured a 1-0 win over the Riverhounds on Saturday night.

The Riverhounds (2-5-2) are 1-4-1 in their last six matches in all competitions.

The goal came off a free kick by Colorado Springs (2-3-5). Aidan Rocha sent a high-arching ball from the left wing toward the far post and Mahoney headed it inside the opposite post.

The Riverhounds’ best chance to tie came in the 85th minute when Switchbacks goalkeeper Christian Herrera came way off his line and unsuccessfully tried to reel in a Danny Griffin header. The ball ricocheted to Jason Boregy at the top of the 18, but Herrera managed to get in the way of his shot.

The Riverhounds, in the midst of a four-game road trip, return to US Open Cup action Wednesday when they visit MLS side Philadelphia Union in a Round of 16 match Wednesday.
