Once upon a time the Republican Party promoted itself as the party of fiscal responsibility. With the current “Big Beautiful Bill,” they have destroyed whatever was left of that imaginary idea. Under the administrations of George W. Bush and Donald Trump, tax cuts favoring corporations and the very wealthy caused the ratio of debt to the economy to soar.

Republicans who backed those tax cuts now want even more. Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” is estimated to cause our national debt to increase by $3.3 trillion over the next 10 years. Its tax cuts for the ultra wealthy don’t begin to be balanced by proposed cuts in health care and other social and disaster services.

Whatever happened to fiscal responsibility? Whatever happened to social responsibility?
