Former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Ty Smith has signed a one-year contract with Dinamo Minsk, a team based in Belarus that competes in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

That team announced the transaction via Telegram, a popular social media platform in Europe.

A native of Lloydminster, Alberta, the 25-year-old Smith spent last season with the Carolina Hurricanes organization, primarily at the American Hockey League (AHL) level with the Chicago Wolves. In 36 AHL games, the left-shooting Smith scored 28 points (five goals, 23 assists).

Smith spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins between 2022 and 2024, primarily with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. His lone NHL action with the Penguins came during the 2022-23 season in the form of nine games and four points (one goal, three assists).

In addition to the Penguins and Hurricanes, Smith has played for the New Jersey Devils. That club selected him in the first round (No. 17 overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft.
