Impaired driving fatalities have increased by 7% in Pennsylvania since 2019, according to a statistic from Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

The national nonprofit, created in 1980 by a mother whose daughter was killed in a drunken-driving accident, is working to erase that number.

“It is really something that is 100% preventable,” said Justin Oline, development and community engagement specialist for Mothers Against Drunk Driving Pennsylvania State Office.

Community members can support the mission by registering for the 11th annual Walk Like MADD 5K Dash Pittsburgh on June 8 at North Park Rose Barn and Boat House, 303 Pearce Mill Road.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with an opening ceremony at 9 and race following at 9:30. Food, drinks and entertainment will be on hand, as well as basket raffles.

Walk Like MADD Pittsburgh is one of dozens of events taking place across the country, with Pittsburgh’s fundraising goal of $32,000.

“This walk is our signature fundraiser. We do walks throughout the country,” Oline said.

The event at North Park will provide a space for individuals to come together, share their experiences and educate others about the impact of impaired driving.

“Tables will be set up for sponsors, speakers and victims. There will be a tribute center for victims who passed away and for their families,” Oline said.

The race usually features an impacted family speaking on a victim’s behalf. Law enforcement also will be present.

“We make sure everyone feels welcome,” Oline said.

Registration ranges from $20 to $35, depending on youth, adult, walker or runner, according to Paige Cardone, regional executive director for MADD’s New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania offices. There also is a virtual option.
