Pittsburgh public safety officials said a man was arrested near PNC Park after allegedly stabbing a convenience store employee Downtown.

Police were dispatched to the 600 block of Liberty Avenue for reports of a stabbing around 1:14 p.m. Friday.

Officers found a man who had been stabbed in his ribs. He was alert and talking with officers and medics, officials said. He was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

The victim — who public safety officials identified as a convenience store employee — and other witnesses told police an adult male had tried to steal merchandise from the store. When the victim tried to stop him, the two struggled and the alleged thief stabbed the worker.

The man then fled on foot to the North Shore. Using city cameras to track the man, police found him on the river trail near PNC Park.

He was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for medical clearance. He will be taken to the Allegheny County Jail and charges are forthcoming, public safety officials said.
