The Parkway East’s inbound lanes reopened Tuesday morning after an overturned tractor-trailer prompted a four-hour shutdown that snarled rush-hour traffic.

The crash happened before 5 a.m. between the Edgewood/Swissvale and Wilkinsburg exits, according to PennDOT. The tractor-trailer was on its side, blocking much of the three-lane highway. All lanes were closed until just after 8:30 a.m. when vehicles started moving again.

PennDOT spokeswoman Yasmeen Manyisha said there were intermittent closures of the highway in the afternoon to continue cleanup efforts.

There were lane restrictions for outbound traffic. Those were lifted after 8 a.m.

Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV reported that heavy equipment was brought in to remove steel coils from the highway. It was unclear if anyone was hurt.
