A massive crash involving 22 vehicles occurred at 6:30 a.m. on the Boulevard of the Allies/Forbes Avenue off ramp coming off of Interstate 376, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety officials.

Five people were transported to hospitals with minor injuries from the crash in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood, officials said.

A number of vehicles are being towed away.

Officials said drivers should exercise caution Thursday as a number of Pittsburgh-area roads are suffering from icy patches.

Temperatures plummeted overnight Thursday, leading to some icy conditions on Pittsburgh-area and Western Pennsylvania roadways and some resulting crashes, including the 22-vehicle on the Parkway East.

Southwestern Pennsylvania is reporting temperatures in the low 20s Thursday morning, with wind chills in the single digits, according to Triblive news partner WTAE.

Some snow fell overnight in parts of the region — half an inch in some areas — leading to some slick spots on roads.

WTAE meteorologist Ashley Dougherty said the morning will bring gusty winds reaching 25 to 35 mph.

A tractor-trailer crashed and flipped over on Interstate 80 early Thursday morning, closing off part of that highway.

Eastbound lanes of I-80 have been shut down near Emlenton in Venango County.

A section of I-79 in Kennedy Township was closed down for over an hour Wednesday night after a tractor-trailer overturned near the Route 51 off ramp.

The interstate was reopened late Wednesday night after crews cleared the crash.

WTAE said drivers are reporting icy and slick conditions on Route 28 early Thursday morning.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout Thursday and into Friday.
