A remote section of the Great Allegheny Passage between Ohiopyle and Confluence is closed for the next two months while construction crews replace an aging culvert.

The section between mile markers 68 and 69 was closed earlier this month in Ohiopyle State Park and construction vehicle traffic is heavy in the area, according to a trail alert. Cranes will be used to remove and replace the culvert that moves water underneath the trail to the Youghiogheny River.

There is no detour because of the narrow and steep conditions. Work is expected to be completed by April 28.

Through-travelers can contact a local outfitter for shuttle services for transportation between Ohiopyle and Confluence.

The 150-mile former rail line runs from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Md. It saw 1.4 million users in 2020 and was finished in 2013. The first 100 miles between McKeesport and Meyersdale, which includes the currently closed section, was completed in 2001.
