This year’s Carnival for a Cure event at Edgeworth Elementary School raised $3,600 for the American Cancer Society.
Its 14th annual installment of the fifth grade, student-driven fundraiser with the Sewickley Valley Relay for Life committee took place on Feb. 27.
Committee member and fifth grade teacher Jen Bradley said 74 students created various games for Quaker Valley families to play, and about 400 people participated.
Games included fruit matching, ball tosses, spinning wheels and even Harry Potter and Minion themed activities.
“One of our big goals is to teach them about selflessness through community service,” Bradley said. “(It’s an) opportunity to do something that’s fun, but benefits somebody else. (Students) get to enjoy it, but then donate this money to someone in need.”
Families who want to donate but could not make the carnival can drop off monetary donations at the school, 200 Meadow Lane.
Donations should be designated to the American Cancer Society.
The next Sewickley Valley Relay for Life committee event is being planned for April 26 at the Edgeworth Club.
It’s called Cooking for a Cure and has a ’50s theme entitled “Twist and Shout.“
More information will be released closer to the event.
