If residents near Oakmont Country Club catch a whiff of natural gas this summer, it’s probably nothing to worry about.
The club, which will host the 2025 U.S Open golf tournament next June, has construction underway, including some projects involving natural gas work.
The club insists members and nearby residents have nothing to be concerned about.
“Everything we do at Oakmont Country Club is for the safety of everyone at the club as well as the community, which is our number one priority,” said Michael McCormick, the club’s grounds superintendent.
The natural gas-related projects are being performed with direct oversight from Peoples Gas.
Nick Paradise, Peoples Gas spokesman, confirmed the work at the country club and said the smell is not harmful. He suggests anyone with a concern about the odor contact Peoples.
“It is not harmful to smell natural gas or methane in terms of inhaling it. That is not a risk. It certainly is flammable. If you think you smell gas, get away from that immediate area and call us.”
Oakmont Country Club has no definite timeline for when the work on the property will be completed.
