Authorities have yet to release the identity of a man who they said shot and killed himself during a traffic stop in Ligonier Township on Saturday.

Ligonier Valley Police initiated a traffic stop around 5 p.m. near the intersection of Route 30 and Baywood Road, said Melanie Jones, spokesperson for Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli. County detectives were called to assist in the investigation.

Ligonier Valley Police Chief Mike Matrunics deferred to the district attorney’s office for comment.

No additional updates on the investigation were provided Monday.

Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson could not be reached for comment.

It is unclear why police stopped the man. No shots were fired at police and police did not fire any shots, Jones said.
