What do you wear to Give Breast Cancer the Boot?

Boots, obviously — and cowboy boots, specifically.

Westmoreland Walks hosted its annual country-and-western-themed event on July 21 at Yinzer Valley Farms in East Huntingdon, and attendees took the dress code seriously.

There were boots, hats, neckerchiefs, jeans, prairie dresses and denim jackets galore — along with plenty of pink, the signature color of breast cancer awareness.

Event co-chair Suzie Luikart even blended the two themes, taking a pair of green suede boots and painting them pink.

Along with the fashion parade, the evening included raffles, silent auction, Bloody Mary bar, country music by the Michael Christopher Band and dinner served alfresco at tables overlooking the surrounding rolling hills.

Westmoreland Walks is a local grassroots organization that raises funds for breast cancer research and provides direct support to patients, survivors and their families.

“They’ve been very good to me,” said corresponding secretary Debbie Weinstein, a cancer survivor, of her fellow organization members. “They do so many good things and they take care of so many women and families.

“They’re pure in heart — it’s not just a social thing for them,” she said.

Joining Luikart as event co-chairs were Trish Fite, Cindy Shaffer and Kim Yagla, with the committee also including Paula Maloney and Barbara Berret.
