In their 10th year of nesting, the Pittsburgh bald eagles in Hays welcomed their second chick of the season on Tuesday morning.
A third egg is expected to hatch between Friday and Sunday, according to the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania and PixCams, which sponsors the live webcam where viewers can see the nest.
Tuesday’s chick is the pair’s 17th eaglet since the birds began nesting on a wooded hillside above the Monongahela River near the Glenwood Bridge a decade ago. The first chick hatched on Monday.
PixCams’ live streaming of the Hays eagles continues to attract new viewers, including public school students using the feed in a Michigan grade school on Monday, said Bill Powers, owner of PixCams in Murrysville.
So far this nesting season, which began in January, 542,000 visitors have generated 1.8 million views from 50 countries, he said.
The Pittsburgh birds are poised to raise three eaglets, which they have done only twice before, including last breeding season.
Both parents will take turns warming their chicks and the remaining egg.
The adults will bring back food to the nest for the eaglets, tearing it into bite-size morsels for the young birds, according to the Audubon Society.
